Hohenunkel is a residential area in the town of Unkel in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Neuwied . It consists of an estate and a former rest home.

The property of Gut Haanhof adjoins to the southeast . The residential area is accessible via Bruchhausen and a non-public access road that begins between Scheuren and Rheinbreitbach .

history

The manor was established in 1906 as an agricultural enterprise, which extended to the cultivation of grain and potatoes as well as dairy farming and a dairy (from 1913 with yoghurt plant ). It was founded by Johannes Hundhausen, who also built the access road into the Rhine Valley. He ran the business with an area of around 60  hectares on his own until 1920 and then leased it to the Rheinische Provinzialversicherung . In 1930 greenhouses were added on an area of 2,500 square meters for the cultivation of tomatoes and lettuce . Serious damage caused by a windpipe in 1934 and a hurricane in 1939 led to the abandonment of these systems.

The manor has been owned by the current operator since 1964. In the census on May 25, 1987, the Hohenunkel residential area (courtyard and rest home) had 14 residents. In 1989 the agricultural use of the property for external needs ended when arable farming and livestock husbandry were given up for the purpose of establishing boarding houses . For this purpose, the existing stable and hall buildings could be converted. A second indoor arena was put into operation in 2005. Today the Hohenunkel estate is also the location of a smokehouse .

Rest home

To the north and below the Hohenunkel farm there is a stately mansion on the edge of the forest , the building of a former recreation and later country school home . It was built between 1906 and 1908 together with the agricultural business of Johannes Hundhausen. The mansion is a historicizing plastered building with a tower. After it was taken over by Hoesch AG in 1946, it was used as a rest home for miners and the former greenhouses of the manor were converted into a bowling alley . In 1962 it became the property of the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr and has since served as a country school home. In 1982 it was given up by the city, but continued to be operated by a private association. In the fall of 2002 the country school house closed, since then the listed manor house has been vacant. In 2012, however, a renovation was in progress.
