description

On the Hohe Berg, the chimney filling of a former volcano is marked by basalt columns. They were created by the relatively slow cooling of the basaltic lava, arranged radially and rise towards the center, similar to a coal pile . This is why one also speaks of mileage creation . The basalt mined here in quarries contains olivine nodules from the earth's mantle and pieces of red sandstone . The exploited volcanic vent and the shape of the crater are clearly recognizable from the many years of quarrying.

On the northern slope of the Hohe Berg there is the Madstein natural monument , a striking basalt block, the formation of which can also be traced back to volcanic activity in this area.

The summit area has been under nature protection since 1940 under the name " Hoher Berg bei Lettgenbrunn ".
