Hollis Frampton was from 1951 at the Phillips Academy boarding school in Andover , Massachusetts , where he met Frank Stella and Carl Andre . He studied from 1954 to 1956 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , where he took a number of subjects, but left without a degree. Frampton began an exchange of letters with Ezra Pound in 1956. He moved to Washington, DC, and visited the sick poet in the hospital almost every day in the fall of 1957. Then pound ended the work on the Rock Drill - Cantos and began the throne-Section. He also read the entire poem with explanations to his visitors. Frampton translated at the suggestion of Pounds Leo Frobenius book Erlebte Erdteile (1925-29). In March 1958, Frampton went to New York and moved into an apartment on Mulberry Street with his friends Andre and Stella, later only Andre. He began with photography, documenting the work of Stella ( The Secret World of Frank Stella ; 1958–62) and Andre (1959–). He also portrayed James Rosenquist and Larry Poons (for Vogue , August 1965). He lived with the artist Lee Lozano in 1965 . In 1966 he married Marcia Steinbrecher, they were divorced in 1974.

In 1962, Frampton began filming and worked as a structural filmmaker. His most important work is Zorn's Lemma (1970), which drastically changed the perception of experimental film. Alongside Stan Brakhage , Hollis Frampton was a pioneer of abstract expression in American film. Hollis Frampton showed nostalgia and critical mass at Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Film Show: New American Cinema department .
