Lee Lozano
Lee Lonzano (born November 5, 1930 in Newark as Leonore Knaster , † October 2, 1999 in Dallas ) was an American painter, concept and performance artist. After she turned away from the art world in 1971, her work was only rediscovered by a wider art audience after her death.
Life
Lozano was born as Leonore Knaster. She studied philosophy and natural sciences at the University of Chicago from 1948 , and graduated there in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts . In 1956 she married the architect Adrian Lozano, whose name she took on. She studied fine arts at the Art Institute of Chicago , where she received a Master of Fine Arts in 1960 . The following year she moved to New York City , where she quickly made contact with the art scene.
In her work, she dealt with topics such as cultural identity, especially the construction of femininity, as well as with the art business itself. As a painter, she worked both figuratively (but also with text passages) and conceptually-abstractly, in her most famous work, the eleven large-format paintings from the Wave Series (1967–1970).
Lozano had success in the art world: she participated in group shows at Dick Bellamy's Green Gallery in 1964 and 1965 , her first solo show at the Bianchini Gallery in 1966, followed by group shows at the Dwan Gallery ( Language III ) and at Paula Cooper ( Number 7 ) in 1969 and in 1970 a solo exhibition at the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art when the artist was 40 years old. Nevertheless, like conceptual art in general, it was radically opposed to the practices of the art world. She also questioned her own position in the art scene just as radically. One of her best known works is the conceptual artwork General Strike Piece :
"GENERALLY BUT DETERMINEDLY AVOID BEING PRESENT AT OFFICIAL OR" UPTOWN "FUNCTIONS OR GATHERINGS RELATED TO THE" ART WORLD "IN ORDER TO PURSUE INVESTIGATIONS OF TOTAL PERSONAL AND PUBLIC REVOLUTION. EXHIBIT IN PUBLIC ONLY PIECES WHICH FURTHER SHARING OF IDEAS & INFORMATION RELATED TO TOTAL PERSONAL & PUBLIC REVOLUTION. "
It is widely believed that she moved to Dallas around 1972 after staying and exhibiting in London (1971). According to her cousin, however, she did not appear in Texas until 1982 . Her connection to the New York art world broke off in the early 1970s, her action BOYCOTT WOMEN (1971) was a final step. Lozano died of cancer in Dallas in 1999 at the age of 68. After a solo exhibition at PS1 in 2004, Lozano was rediscovered in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
