The village, first mentioned in writing in 1391, is the only place of the district council of the same name in the west of the Kalusch Rajon .

The village is located in the historical Galicia about 40 km northwest of the Oblast center Ivano-Frankivsk on the bank of the Syvka ( Сівка ), a 79 km long right tributary of the Dniester and on the bank of the Chechva ( Чечва ), a 52 km long left tributary the Limnytsia . Holyn is located on the N 10 trunk road between Brochniv-Ossada 5 km in the west and the Kalush district center 13 km in the east and has a train station on the Stryj-Ivano-Frankivsk railway line .

There are numerous potassium salt deposits in the vicinity of Holyn , due to which the "Holyn" mine began operations in 1961.
