geography

course

The Holzbach rises on the Westerwald basalt plateau in an alluvial forest at the northeastern foot of the Ochsenberg , east of Rennerod . At its upper reaches it is also known as the Seckbach . It initially moves west along the northern slope of the Ochsenberg . After a good kilometer, it leaves the forest and continues its strongly straightened course through fields and meadows. Shortly before it reaches Rennerod, it turns to the southwest and flows on the eastern edge of the village parallel to Herborner Straße and then passes the village from Brunnenstraße, partly piped. His path now faces south and is accompanied by the B 54 ( Limburger Straße ) for a short time . It now flows on the eastern edge of Waldmühlen , turns sharply to the southwest at Mühlenstraße and then runs along the southern edge of the village. It crosses under the B 54 , after a good kilometer it reaches the outskirts of Seck and then passes the south of the village. At the end of the village, the Wesbach stream reinforces it on the right . The Holzbach changes its direction of flow again to the south and is fed by the Mausbach after a good two kilometers on its left . The Er now meanders southwest, flows past the Dapprich estate , which has been documented since 1212, and then reaches the Holzbach Breakthrough nature reserve , also known as the Holzbach Gorge , which has been designated since 1929 . There, over time, the stream has dug a gorge over 1.5 kilometers long and up to 30 meters deep into the basalt . Wedged in by steep cliffs, it has to wind its way between large rocks around fallen trees. Its banks are mainly lined with ash , elm and maple trees . At the Lochmühle the Holzbach leaves the nature reserve again and flows south past the Lexenmühle . He avoids Gemünden by flowing around the place from the east on the western slope foot of the Hohe Hahnscheid ( 433  m above sea  level ) along. His path leads past the Hessenmühle and the Neumühle , each of which branches off a mill ditch. A little below the Neumühle , the Keilbach joins him on his right-hand side, southwest of the Galgenberg . The Holzbach then crosses the L 288 and finally flows into the Elbbach at Hammermühle .
