Hooft (also Hooft de Woudenberg et de Gerestein , Hooft van Vreeland , Corver Hooft ) is the name of a noble Amsterdam regent and patrician family from the Golden Age , which was introduced into the newer Dutch nobility in the 19th century.

history

The Hooft family originally came from the area of Zaanstreek , in what is now the province of North Holland , and their members had been known as boatmen and traders since the end of the 15th century. Pieter Willemsz Hooft († 1559) was a wealthy iron merchant and ship owner ; his father Willem Jansz Hooft († 1552) can be regarded as the master of the family. Around 1550 a branch of the Hooft family established itself in Amsterdam in order to operate a flourishing grain trade with the Baltic States from there. At the end of the 16th century, the family came into the Amsterdam government, where it received increasing political influence. Pieter Willemsz's son Cornelis Hooft was an important city ruler of Amsterdam at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries . His nephew Dr. Pieter Jansz Hooft was a friend of Jakob de Graeff Dircksz , with whom he ran a chemical laboratory in Amsterdam. There they invented a perpetual motion machine , which was presented by Cornelis Jacobszoon Drebbel at the court of the English king. Drebbel proclaimed the invention to be his work, but when the queen's carelessness broke the machine, Drebbel could no longer repair it. Pieter's daughter Catharina Hooft , who married Cornelis de Graeff , was made a well-known figure in art history as a child when she was painted by Frans Hals together with her wet nurse. A famous family member, however, was the son of Cornelis Hooft - knight Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft , an important Dutch poet and historian, who was the Truchsess von Muiden and around whom the literary and musical circle Muiderkring was founded.

In the 17th century, the family was one of the better known in Holland, various family members were related to the families of De Witt , Bicker , De Graeff , Van Hogendorp , Van der Dussen , Van Slingelandt , Van den Bosch , Valckenier and the Overlanders .

Further family members were Henrick Hooft , the landlord of Oudkarspel, Schoten and Schoterbosch, who was an orange -minded Amsterdam city ruler at the end of the Golden Age . His son Gerrit Hendricksz Hooft was also a frequent mayor of his hometown, and his brother Willem Hooft , who was married to Johan de Witt's daughter Maria , also became an Amsterdam regent, dikemaster of Delftland and head of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) . Gerrit Hendricksz Hooft's son Gerrit Hooft continued this tradition seamlessly when he led the fortunes of Amsterdam as the ruling mayor in the 1750s and 1760s. Hendrik Hooft Graafland (1764-1828) brought the double name into the sex, his parents were Joan Graafland III. (1736–1799) - landlord of Schotervlieland and ontvanger-generaal of the admiralty te Amsterdam - and Hester Hooft (1740–1791). This branch of the family was accepted into the Dutch nobility in 1895 with Mr. Ferdinand and Mr. Cornelis Hendrik Theodorus Adrianus Hooft Graafland. The related Graafland family was introduced to the new Dutch nobility in 1815 with Mr. Joan Graafland . Both branches of the family received the Jonkheer rating .

In the Amsterdam line there was Mr. Hendrik Gerritsz Hooft (1676-1752), a finance minister of Holland, and Hendrik Hooft, one of the last important republican-minded Dutch rulers, who was one of the most important representatives of the patriot movement from 1781 to 1788.
