Horace Burrell
Horace Garfield Burrell (born February 8, 1950 in May Pen , Clarendon Parish , † June 6, 2017 in Baltimore , Maryland ), also known as Captain Burrell , was a Jamaican football official and founder and CEO of The Captain's Bakery and Grill and Captain's Aviation Services .
Athletic career
Horace Burrell took over the presidency of the Jamaica Football Federation for the first time in 1994 . Under his leadership, the national team of the Caribbean state qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time , at the World Cup tournament in 1998 the team ultimately had almost no chance as an outsider and, after defeating Croatia and Argentina, achieved a 2-1 win over Japan thanks to two goals by Theodore Whitmore finished third in the group stage. As a result, he received several national and international awards.
In 2003 Burrell handed over the post at the top of the association to Crenston Boxhill after a lost fight vote , but returned to the chair four years later. At the same time, he was on the board of the Caribbean Football Union and CONCACAF , and he was also part of the FIFA ethics committee . He was banned from this for three months in October 2011 because he had not been cooperative in coming to terms with the Jack Warner corruption scandal . After the suspension expired, he returned to his offices in 2012 and was also accepted into the organizing committee for soccer competitions at the Summer Olympics .
Horace Burrell died on June 6, 2017, at the age of 67, of complications from cancer after receiving treatment in the United States.
