Horrendous is an American death metal band based in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania and Columbia , South Carolina that was formed in 2009.

history

The band was formed in early 2009. In the spring the band wrote their first demo called Sweet Blasphemies , which was recorded in the summer and sold on CD-R via the Myspace profile. In mid-2010, the band signed a contract with Skeleton Plague Records and Dark Descent Records , who together re-released the demo as an audio cassette with an edition of 200 copies. Another edition appeared in March 2011. In the summer of 2010, the band began recording their debut album, which was released in 2012 under the name The Chills on Dark Descent Records. The second album Ecdysis followed in 2014 on the same label . The band's third studio album, Anareta , was also released via Dark Descent Records in October 2015.

style

According to Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard , the band on Ecdysis has broken away from classic Death Metal, but you can still see the roots. The album title describes the process of molting in the animal kingdom. In an interview with Schiffmann, Damian Herring stated that the texts revolve around "breaking down inhibitions, inner growth and a clear view of the world by throwing off any harmful ballast". Nowadays people value texts, whereas on the first demo they still dealt with zombie stories. The band was influenced by American bands like Morbid Angel and Death , but they prefer the European sound, especially the one from Sweden . Schiffmann also found that the group sounds more like a European band. According to Herring, special emphasis is placed on hearing the bass instead of doubling the rhythm guitar. In a previous issue, Sebastian Schilling had reviewed Ecdysis - Similar to Tribulation and Morbus Chron , the band have now tried to enrich their Death Metal with classic Progressive Rock . In addition, a slight influence from Doom Metal can be heard. The solos and riffs would be reminiscent of the early 1980s. The opening riff of the opening song could have come from Judas Priest . The bass is not distorted and is always easy to hear. The singing is more reminiscent of Karsten Jäger von Disbelief than, for example, Martin van Drunen . In his review of the album, Christoph Meul from metal.de stated that it was influenced by both Swedish death metal bands from the 1990s in Stockholm and Gothenburg , as well as modern and progressive psychedelic death metal groups such as Tribulation and Morbus Chron can be heard. The songs are varied and individual.
