Horst-Michael Schaffer

Horst-Michael Schaffer (* 1971 in Weißkirchen in Styria ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( trumpet , arrangements , composition ); Together with Heinrich von Kalnein he has been leading the Jazz Big Band Graz since 2003 .

After completing classical vocal training at the Graz Conservatory, Schaffer studied jazz trumpet at the Graz University of Art and in London as well as with Bobby Shew .

After spending two years in London, he became a songwriter for BMG . As a producer and musician in the pop and club sector, he worked with artists such as Jens Winter , Frank Travis, Maxwell, Freddy Cash jr., Nick Cave , X-Colored, Vienna Scientists, Karim Matusiewicz ( Na Wylot ) and Alex Deutsch .

In the 1990s he became a member of the Jazz Big Band Graz and worked with a. a. Sabina Hank ( Music in a Mirror ), Ed Partyka , Georg Breinschmid ( Brein's World ), Erich Kleinschuster , Django Bates , Louis Sclavis , Patti Austin , Kurt Elling , John Hollenbeck ( Joy & Desire ), Fritz Pauer , Rens Newland ( Freedom Street Parade ), Wayne Darling and Mark Murphy . From 2004 to 2009 he was employed at the Burgtheater .

In 2003 he taught for a year at the Jazz Institute of the University of Art in Graz, where he taught trumpet and ensemble. Since 2008 he has been teaching jazz trumpet at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .
