Horst de Marées (sports scientist)

Horst de Marées (born June 15, 1936 in Zwickau ; † March 16, 1994 ) was a German sports physician and author.

Life

De Marées grew up in Mülsen St. Jacob near Zwickau. His father worked as a veterinarian . His childhood was marked by World War II and the early death of his father in 1942. After moving to Glauchau at the end of the war, his mother worked as a catechist .

After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig and trained regularly at the German University for Physical Culture . His involvement in the student community led to a reduction in his scholarship and he was denied a position as a research assistant . He then switched to the Medical Academy in Dresden after completing the Physikum .

Since the one-sided politicization at the universities of the GDR was contrary to his own worldview, de Marées left the GDR in 1959 and continued his studies at the University of Tübingen . In 1961 he finished his studies with the medical state examination .

After completing his time as a medical assistant at various hospitals in Baden-Württemberg , he received his license to practice medicine in 1964 and began his doctorate in Tübingen on the subject of comparing biological test methods on the skin tolerance of odorous substances . He then worked as an assistant in the Paul Lechler Tropical Hospital in Tübingen and gained professional experience in the context of practice substitutions in the Swabian Alb . He is said to have made all home visits by bike.

He then worked as a scientific assistant to the German Research Foundation  at the Eye Clinic in Tübingen and in the Physiological Institute of the University of Tübingen.

In 1966, de Marées went to the Hannover Medical School and completed his habilitation there in 1970 in the field of clinical physiology . In 1975 he took over the newly established chair for sports medicine at the University of Bochum , which he headed until he was appointed director of the Federal Institute for Sports Science in 1991. He researched the processes of circulatory regulation as well as the area of ​​sport-related sensory and neurophysiological issues.

Publications

His book Sport Physiology was first published in 1974 and is now in its 9th edition. It is considered a standard work for sports scientists and sports medicine specialists. The authors Hermann Heck and Ulrich Bartmus have taken on the further processing and updating of the work.
