The Huancarani District is located in the Paucartambo Province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on May 11, 1987. It has an area of 146 km². The 2017 census counted 7,667 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6204, in 2007 it was 6910. The district administration is located in the small town of Huancarani at an altitude of 3850 m with 2037 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancarani is located 21 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Paucartambo and 35 km east of the regional capital Cusco .
Geographical location
The Huancarani District is located in the southwest of the Paucartambo Province. The west is drained to the Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba). The east is drained via the Río Pichihua to the Río Mapacho , the upper reaches of the Río Paucartambo (Río Yavero).
The Huancarani district borders on the Caicay district to the west, the Colquepata district to the north and east, and the Ccatca district ( Quispicanchi province ) to the south .
