Hubert Wachter (born January 20, 1950 in Gars am Kamp ) is an Austrian journalist , publicist and author . In 1992 he was a founding member of the Austrian news magazine News .

Career

Hubert Wachter began his journalistic career in February 1970 at Niederösterreichische Nachrichten (NÖN) . At that time Wachter was working as an editor in the Lower Austrian Press House in Sankt Pölten . From 1976 he was head of the service of the NÖN under the editor-in-chief of Hans Ströbitzer . From 1973 to 1979 he was also vice chairman of the works council of the Lower Austrian press office, which had 450 employees at the time.

In 1979 Wachter moved to the daily newspaper Kurier in Vienna , at that time under the editor-in-chief of Gerd Leitgeb. Initially responsible as an editor for Lower Austria, shortly afterwards he switched to domestic politics. From 1985 he worked as a political columnist and a short time later became a member of the Kurier editorial team. From 1984 to 1989 Wachter was chairman of the editorial committee of the daily newspaper Kurier for all 160 employed editors.

Between 1990 and 1992 the Austrian journalist returned to Lower Austria, where he became vice-editor-in-chief of the Lower Austrian Press House and also founded the regional newspaper Der Niederösterreicher . In April 1992 he moved to Vienna again, where he was a founding member of the Austrian news magazine News with the then owners Wolfgang Fellner and Helmut Fellner and Springer-Verlag Berlin . Since 2006 Wachter has been Senior Editor of the weekly magazine.

Today Hubert Wachter writes guest comments for the Austrian farmer newspaper (since 2010). Since 2014 he has also been a guest commentator at the local TV station P3tv , where in 2015 he also has his own monthly TV show entitled Auf ein Wort , a 30-minute talk format.

Personal

As the son of Leopoldine and Josef Wachter - his father was a dairy director at Milchring Niederösterreich-Mitte, the Obergrafendorf dairy and the Lower Austrian Dairy Association - Hubert Wachter attended compulsory school and the commercial academy in Sankt Pölten. Before he found his way into journalism, Wachter completed his military service (EF) in 1969 in Hörsching and Langenlebarn .

Wachter has a daughter and is single. His foreign language skills include English and French.

In 2015 the Austrian journalist and author started his regular retirement pension, but is still active as a journalist.
