Hugh Edward Gilbert OSB (born March 15, 1952 in Emsworth , Hampshire ; civil Edward Gilbert) is a British religious and Roman Catholic Bishop of Aberdeen .

Life

Edward Gilbert converted from the Anglican Church to the Roman Catholic Church on December 24, 1970. He visited u. a. the St Paul's School and received his bachelor's degree in history in 1974 at King's College London . In the Scottish Benedictine Abbey of Pluscarden he joined the order of the Benedictines , took the religious name Hugh and made the temporary and on March 10, 1979 the solemn profession on March 10, 1976 . The Bishop of Aberdeen, Mario Joseph Conti , ordained him on June 29, 1982 . In the monastery Pluscarden he became subprior in 1984, novice master in 1985 and prior in 1990 . He was elected on 29 October 1992 by the Convention, succeeding Alfred Spencer abbot and on 8 December 1992 benediziert . During his tenure, the monastery community grew to 27 monks.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Aberdeen on June 4, 2011. The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh , Keith Michael Patrick Cardinal O'Brien , on 15 August of the same year; Co- consecrators were Mario Joseph Conti , Archbishop of Glasgow , and Peter Antony Moran , Former Bishop of Aberdeen.
