Hugo Bestehorn Werke für Papierverarbeitung Magdeburg (HBM) was a paper mill and printing company in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt . Parts of the factory buildings that have been preserved are under monument protection .

location

The factory is located in the Neue Neustadt district of Magdeburg , Nachtweide 36–43, on the west side of the street.

Architecture and history

The company was founded in 1903 by Hugo Bestehorn, who was also the sole owner.

The factory was built in 1902/1903 and in a second section in 1911/1912 according to plans by the engineer Paul Ranft . A monumental-looking, four-storey building with brick facades was erected on a plinth along the street, with the top floor being designed as a mezzanine floor . The street-side facade was initially 12-axis and was then extended to the north and south to 24 axes in the second construction phase. The entrance to the property is located between the eleventh and twelfth axes. The building is designed as a reinforced concrete structure, with the facade being faced with yellow bricks. The facing of the base consists of yellowish sandstone blocks . A sloping cornice separates the base and facade . There is a colossal structure of pilasters on the facade . On the second floor, the window openings are shaped as basket arches . The arches are highlighted by a band of stone . Following the function of the building, the windows are lined up like a ribbon. A bar pattern made of yellow bricks and plaster is arranged in the parapet fields below the windows. Horizontal strips of green glazed bricks run through the facade both above the base and on the second floor. The area of the cornice is clearly emphasized. The cornice on the north side of the house has been preserved in its original concave design. The building is covered by a flat roof . On the north side, the facade ends in a rounded corner of the building. The design combines classic motifs of ancient architecture with shapes of the geometric Art Nouveau and shows approaches of a modern grid facade .

Due to its size and design language, the building is one of the most impressive industrial buildings in Magdeburg and is reminiscent of the industrial architecture of Berlin in late historicism .

In the local register of monuments , the factory is listed as a monument under registration number 094 16558 .

The factory building was very modern for its construction time, which corresponded to the company's reputation as a modern large-scale printing company.

In the 1920s, the company premises extended to about 12 acres , with the factory buildings having up to five floors. The company was active in the field of paper processing. Posters and brochures were produced. The company also employed artists and advertising professionals. In addition, packaging was created for various products such as soaps, but also small folding boxes or 25 kg bags for the food industry and luxury packaging for chocolate items. There was an offset printing plant , a cardboard box and a production line for bags.

At the end of the 1920s, the company ran into financial difficulties, so that in 1929 bankruptcy proceedings were opened against Hugo Bestehorn's assets .

In sources from the 1930s, Silva Metallwerk GmbH is named as the owner of the property . At the beginning of the 1950s, the Walter Genthe construction company , the KWU plant and repair workshop and the F. Rutkowski mattress factory were located at this address . Later, during the GDR era , part II of the Magdeburger Volksstimme was located here. Even after the end of the GDR, the facility initially remained the headquarters of companies in the printing and paper industry. In the mid-1990s, Meiling Druck , Papier Union and Dr. Piel und Partner Redaktions-Service GmbH . In addition, a driving school and the state traffic watch for Saxony-Anhalt operated offices here.
