Germany's urban development

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germany's urban development was the title of a series of publications of communal self-portraits that the Deutsche Architektur- und Industrie-Verlag (DARI) published in Berlin-Halensee from 1919 to around 1932.

Content and frequency of publication

The volumes mostly dealt with individual cities, occasionally also several neighboring cities combined. There were also volumes on rural districts , administrative districts , regions or landscapes. The volumes originated in editorship of the administrative unit - as the processor that are frequently mayor , aldermen or building councilors called. Individual articles were z. B. also written by city councils, officials, theater directors, museum managers, etc. The focus was - the series title Germany's urban planning accordingly - on the urban and regional planning development, but also wirtschaftsgeografische , landscape conservation , local history and tourist aspects have been addressed. The technical operations (supply, disposal, local transport) were often presented. Sometimes plans that had not been implemented were presented even after the respective publication was published.

The production of the books was financed through an almost always very extensive advertising section, in which the advertisements partly consist of relatively detailed descriptions of the local companies and their history, which at first glance differ little from the text contributions in the editorial section. Due to the lack of company archives or other secondary sources, these company presentations are now an important, if not uncritical source.

From today's perspective, the volumes are valuable source material on all of the above-mentioned content-related aspects. In addition to urban development, many volumes also reflect contemporary architecture in a local or regional context. Until the mid-1920s - with a weak economy and relatively little construction activity - conservative, traditional tendencies in architectural design predominate (in continuation of reform architecture or neoclassicism from the period before 1914), while later the contemporary-modern architecture of New Building predominated comes to the fore.

After the Second World War, a series with almost comparable content was published by the Landesdienst-Verlag in Brilon , for which the same series title was used.

reception

“The well-known series of single publications 'Deutschlands Städtebau' published by Dari-Verlag has again been expanded through the publication of publications. A special volume on the Ruhr area and the publications on Elberfeld, Aachen and Essen do justice to the current lively interest in the Rhineland. It is precisely these volumes that are particularly well equipped and provide a very good overview of the entire intellectual and economic life in our western cultural centers. The volume Lübeck is particularly characterized by the collaboration of outstanding scholars, artists and economic politicians. The publications on Gütersloh, Neumünster and Reutlingen show that the publishing house is now expanding its activities to include the smaller towns. Like their predecessors, all volumes are outstanding in terms of their technical booking equipment and thus provide excellent evidence of the efficiency of the German publishing industry at home and abroad.
