Hugo Burghauser

Hugo Burghauser (born February 27, 1896 in Vienna , † December 9, 1982 in New York City ) was an Austrian bassoonist who had to emigrate to the USA.

Life

Burghauser was the son of an Italian mother and a Sudeten German father. In Vienna he studied at the kuk Academy for Music . After his military service he became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1919 and its board member in 1932. In 1937 he received a professorship for bassoon at the music academy. After the annexation of Austria he lost his offices for political reasons and went into exile on September 12, 1938 , first to Canada , then to the USA . There he became a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra in New York in 1941 , which was directed by Arturo Toscanini , with whom he was friends. From 1943 to 1965 he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra .

Burghauser was married to the ballet master of the Vienna State Opera Margherita Wallmann for a few years , but was already living in divorce when he fled Austria.

In 1947 Richard Strauss dedicated his duet concertino for clarinet and bassoon to "Hugo Burghauser, the faithful".
