Hugo Huppert (doctor)

Karl Hugo Huppert (born January 29, 1832 in Marienberg , Erzgebirge, † October 19, 1904 in Prague ) was a German chemist and doctor . From 1872 he worked as a professor of applied medicinal chemistry at the University of Prague , where he also served as rector in 1895/1896, and was particularly concerned with the development of endogenous substances and their detection in body fluids .

Karl Hugo Huppert, son of the trader and wood turner Christian Huppert, studied at the University of Leipzig , including as a student of the physiologist Karl Gotthelf Lehmann (1812–1863), and at the University of Jena . In 1860 he took over the management of the chemical laboratory at Jakobs-Spital in Leipzig, where he obtained his doctorate in 1862. med., completed his habilitation in physiological chemistry in the same year and was also appointed head of the zoochemical laboratory at this hospital. From 1861 to 1972 he taught at the University of Leipzig. He was appointed associate professor in Leipzig in 1872, but in the same year accepted a call to the newly established chair for applied medicinal chemistry at the University of Prague .

In Prague, Huppert introduced the teaching of applied medicinal chemistry from 1872 . Among the numerous topics he worked on in physiological and pathological chemistry, he mainly dealt with the formation of endogenous substances such as blood and bile pigments as well as glycogen , and their detection in body fluids such as blood , pus , bile or urine . He published his findings and findings in numerous publications. Among his students were Franz Hofmeister , Rudolf von Jaksch , Otto Kahler and Franz von Soxhlet .

Huppert was a member of the committee at Prague University that dealt with the restructuring of medical studies, in particular the “ pre-sciences ”. He was also a member of the commission that worked out plans to rebuild the institutes for anatomy , physiology and medicinal chemistry. In the years 1878/1879 and 1902/1903 he was dean of the medical faculty and in 1895/1896 rector of Prague University.

From 1892 Karl Hugo Huppert belonged to the Leopoldina .
