Hugo Friedrich Resch (born March 17, 1925 , † August 19, 1994 ) was a German researcher on the Zimbri Mountains and former chairman of the Cimbern Board of Trustees Bavaria V. He is best known as the author of the Cimbrian dictionary.

Life

He has a daughter, Christine Fischer-Resch.

At the age of twenty he was in Liguria / Italy during World War II , where he learned the local language. In the mid-fifties he started working for the employment office in Landshut and recruited Italian guest workers. This made contact with the thirteen Veronese communities . In the Illasi valley he heard locals speak Cimbrian dialect for the first time in the “ Biartshaus ” (pub) in Ljetzan , and from then on he became enthusiastic about exploring them. It is a special variant of Bavarian . He traveled regularly in the region, made notes and voice recordings, and collected folk songs and fairy tales. Together with the teacher Carlo Nordera, the scientific work "Lietzan-Giazza" was soon created. As a result of the extensive linguistic research that followed , which lasted four decades, there were many more articles for the Landshuter Zeitung , radio and television programs broadcast by ARD and Bayerischer Rundfunk . There were also many multilingual publications. He was an employee of the Vita di Giazza editorial team. This magazine was later renamed "Terra Cimbra".

On his initiative, the Cimbern-Kuratorium Bayern e. V. founded, of which he was managing director for many years. He worked there as a scientific advisor and was elected 1st chairman in 1988.

In the early 1970s he suggested reviving the use of Cimbrian. Only a few years later it was possible to learn Cimbrian again in school.

He made great contributions to researching the language and culture of the Cimbri people by writing a Cimbrian dictionary with around 300 files, which made him the scientific contact person for universities in Germany , Austria and Italy . It contains around 25,000 words and phrases. Its peculiarity is that the three Cimbrian languages of the Thirteen and the Seven Churches as well as that of Lusers are presented in one work and their similarities and differences are shown. This was done by Professor Dr. Anthony Rowley together with Dr. Remigius Geiser transferred to an electronic version.

In addition, he was committed to maintaining intensive contacts with the Cimbrian areas in northern Italy and thus promoted friendly relations with the communities in the Landshut district, of which many community partnerships testify, of which he was one of the founders. The Landshut district itself has also maintained a partnership with the Province of Vicenza and the seven municipalities on the Asiago plateau for decades. The first and therefore oldest partnership has existed between the Velden market and the municipality of Roana since 1976.

He has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (awarded in 1973). He also received the Italian Star of Solidarity (Cavaliere; awarded in 1968) and the City of Landshut's citizen medal. Internationally, in linguistic circles, he earned the reputation of "Bavaria's Ambassador in Northern Italy".

He was made an honorary citizen in several northern Italian communities:

In 1994 he died at the age of 69 after a long and serious illness. In 2013 a memorial was erected to him in Roana next to the Cimbrian Cultural Institute. On his memorial plaque is written “Somme unsarn Khsell Hugo Resch a violent Borbaissgott” (a big thank you to our friend Hugo Resch). On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death, a memorial ceremony will be held in his honor on October 3, 2014 at the Hugo Resch memorial in Roana in the presence of representatives of the community.
