Hugo Schwanert

Franz Hugo Schwanert (born December 17, 1828 in Braunschweig , † October 17, 1902 in Greifswald ) was a German chemist and university professor.

Life

Hugo Schwanert learned from the pharmacist Werner in Braunschweig and from the pharmacist Hartmann in Magdeburg . In 1849 he passed the assistant examination and worked in pharmacies in Bremen and Braunschweig. From 1854 he studied pharmacy and chemistry at the University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1857 under Heinrich Limpricht . When Limprecht changed to a professorship at the University of Greifswald in 1860 , Schwanert followed him and became the first assistant at the Chemical Institute. He completed his habilitation in 1860 and worked from 1863 as an associate professor and from 1875 as a full professor of analytical , pharmaceuticaland technical chemistry . In 1887/1888 he was rector of the university. In 1893 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

He was honored by being awarded the title of a secret councilor and several medals. He died in 1902 shortly after his retirement.

Schwanert married Marie Grote in 1862, daughter of the Braunschweig pharmacist Johann Nicolaus Grote. The marriage resulted in four daughters. Schwanert's older brother was the legal scholar Hermann August Schwanert (1823–1886).

Schwanert worked on the amino acid leucine , hippuric acid , essential oils and corpse alkaloids . He has written numerous scientific publications.
