Life

Hermann August Schwanert was a son of the Brunswick businessman Johann Andreas Christian Schwanert (1797–1830) and his wife Henrike Mathilde, nee. Bode (1795-1835). After graduating from high school in his hometown, he began studying law at the University of Göttingen at Easter 1843 . On September 17, 1846, he was awarded a doctorate in law at the Göttingen Law Faculty with the award-winning thesis: “Enumeratio per universitatem successionum, quae exstant in iure Romano praeter hereditatem et bonorum possessionem” . In 1848 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in Roman law and canon law at the University of Göttingen. Until 1851 he held lectures on Roman law in Göttingen and then went to the University of Prague as an associate professor of Roman law . In 1853 he changed to the chair of Roman law and civil procedural law at the University of Rostock as the successor to Burkard Wilhelm Leist . Schwanert devoted himself to these legal topics for over two decades, reading about pundits and inheritance law. In addition to his seat on the legal examination commission, from 1863 Schwanert was active in the panel of judgments and from 1866 as assessor perpetuus in the administration of the university. For the academic years 1871/72 and 1872/1873 he was elected Rector of the University of Rostock and was dean of the Faculty of Law five times between 1855 and 1874. In 1873 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Wendish Crown by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II . The professorship was taken over by Gustav Ferdinand Kretschmar (1830-1897) when Schwanert followed the call of full professor of Roman law at the University of Breslau in 1874 . In 1880/1881 he was rector of the university. His work also found high recognition in Wroclaw, when he was awarded the title of a Privy Councilor of Justice and the Order of the Red Eagle, fourth class.
