Humboldt honors in the GDR is a documentary film of the DEFA studios for short films by Siegfried Schönfelder from the year 1969th

action

The first recordings show the Berlin Maxim-Gorki-Theater , which in Humboldt's time housed the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin . A string quartet with music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , who also dedicated a cantata to his friend Alexander von Humboldt, can be heard in these historic rooms . Here, in the winter of 1827/1828, Humboldt gave his much -attended Kosmos lectures , with which he imparted a better knowledge and understanding of nature to broad circles.

On September 11, 1969, Unter den Linden leading members of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Humboldt University received the deputy chairman of the GDR Council of Ministers, Doctor Alexander Abusch , who laid a bouquet of flowers at the monument to Alexander von Humboldt. It stands next to that of his brother Wilhelm von Humboldt , in front of the university that has been named after her since 1946. The ceremony will take place in the auditorium with a maximum of 800 high-ranking domestic and foreign guests of honor. In his celebratory address, Alexander Abusch points out that on June 29, 1859, Alexander von Humboldt was the only foreigner in the 19th century to be awarded the highest honorary title of the Mexican republic's benefactor of the fatherland posthumously by President Benito Juárez . At the end of the event, a plaque will be unveiled to commemorate the scientific Kosmos lectures.

As in other cities in the GDR , memorial events are also held in Görlitz . Organized by the Research Council of the Upper Lusatian Library of Sciences and the State Museum for Natural History Görlitz , a Humboldt Symposium is taking place here in the Humboldthaus. During the event, several scientists will explain various aspects of Humboldt's importance in their presentations.

But Humboldt is not only honored in the GDR in festive events for his 200th birthday. There are memorial plaques on the house where he was born, the seat of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin on the square of the academy and on the house where he died. There are commemorative medals and postage stamps with his portrait. Schools, streets and libraries are named after him.

The film also reports on an extensive exhibition in the German State Library which has around 500 letters from Humboldt, his famous travel diaries, manuscripts and publications, as well as colored images from his five-year American research trip. The visitors also showed great interest in the exhibits relating to Humboldt's Russian-Siberian journey in 1829.

The German- Latin American Society is dedicating a Presidium meeting to the Humboldt anniversary, at which numerous guests from Latin American countries are also present. The Berlin Archenhold observatory honors Humboldt's relationships with Berlin astronomy . The grand finale of the festivities was a reception by the GDR Council of Ministers, at which the representatives of the GDR met once again with the prominent guests who came to Berlin to honor Alexander von Humboldt.
