The Humboldt is a Peruvian fisheries research vessel .

history

The ship, designed as a fishing trawler , was built at the Peruvian shipyard SIMA-PERÚ SA with technical and financial support from the German Society for Technical Cooperation . The keel was laid on July 18, 1977, the launch on October 13, 1978. The ship was completed on February 10, 1980.

The ship is named after the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt . The ship was part of the celebrations in Peru to commemorate Humboldt's American expedition . To mark the occasion, a postage stamp was issued in 2002 that shows a portrait of Humboldt and the ship.

tasks

The main tasks of the ship include monitoring fish stocks, especially those of anchovies and sardines in the Humboldt Current, as well as marine research off the Peruvian coast. In the southern summer, the ship is also used for research trips in the Antarctic .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by two B & W - diesel engines with 1450  hp power driven. The motors act on a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster .

Two generators driven by Deutz diesel engines with 388  kW each and one generator driven by a Deutz diesel engine with 188 kW output are available for the power supply.

The ship has a range of up to 10,000  nautical miles . It can stay at sea continuously for around 37 days.

There are several laboratories on board as well as a cargo area with a capacity of 100 m³. The ship offers space for 40 crew members and 40 scientists.
