The dog head is 470.6  m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation of the Hemberg ridge , the Gilserberger heights and the Upper Hessian threshold . It is located near Schönau in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

The wooded Hundskopf rises in the southern part of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park in the southern center of the Hemberg ridge, which lies between the core towns of the communities of Jesberg in the northeast and Gilserberg in the southwest. To the north is Densberg (to Jesberg), to the east-northeast the Hofgut Richerode (to Jesberg), to the south-south-east of Sebbeterode and to the west -south- west of Schönau (both to Gilserberg). Its western neighbor is the Schloßberg ( 419  m ) with the Schönstein castle ruins above the Gilsa valley .

The Gilsa flows a few kilometers west of the Hundskopf , and its tributary Treisbach runs east . The Gilsa tributary Bernbach rises on its western flank , and the Helenen spring is located on the northern flank .

Natural allocation

The dog's head is one in the natural environment feature unit group West Hesse Highlands (no. 34) and in the main unit Oberhessische threshold (346) for subunit Gilserberger heights (346.0) that North-South direction of the cellar forest in the Vogelsberg connects. The landscape falls to the north into the Löwensteiner Grund sub-unit (341.7).

Traffic and walking

From east to south-east past the Hundskopf, Bundesstraße 3 runs through Richerode and Sebbeterode, which runs through the entire Hemberg ridge . From this road branches off in Jesberg, the district road  59, which runs through Densberg to Schönstein . From there, the K 3425 leads through Schönau to a junction with the B 3 near Sebbeterode . The Kellerwaldsteig leads past the Helenenquelle spring on the north slope of the elevation .
