The Gilsa is a 20.9 km long, western and orographically left tributary of the Schwalm in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder-Kreis ( Germany ).

course

The Gilsa rises in the Gilserberger Heights south of Gilserberg just outside the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park . Their main source is on the north flank of 432.6  m above sea level. NHN high and with its western summit (approx.  428  m ) the Rhine-Weser watershed touching the cold hornbeam . The course of the river can be divided into three sections.

First of all, the upper reaches of the Gilsa flow predominantly northwards through the north of the Gilserberger Heights, where several streams flow to it in the village of Gilserberg. From now on it runs within the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park, where after another 3 kilometers to the north at the Schönstein castle ruins, it reaches the southwestern foothills of the Löwensteiner Grund , which separates the Gilserberger Heights from the Kellerwald to the north .

The Gilsa below the Schönstein castle ruins

After flowing around the castle ruins of Schönstein clockwise, the Gilsa follows the Löwensteiner Grund in an east-northeast direction to flow through the narrow valley area of Densberg . Here is the Hemberg ridge with the Hundskopf ( 470.6  m ) on its right or southern bank , the steep slopes of which (in the area of the Schloßberg with the Schönstein castle ruins, west of Densberg and between Densberg and Jesberg) extend directly to the Gilsa . On the other hand, the landscape rises gradually from its left and especially its north bank to the significantly higher peaks of the Kellerwald: West of the river rises the Jeust (approx.  585  m ) and north of the Gilsa the Hohe Keller with the desert garden ( 675 m ) , 3  m ) and the Hunsrück ( 635.9  m ).

In the Middle Ages, an important thoroughfare led through this narrow part of the Gilsa Valley, which was protected by the castles Schönstein , Densberg and Jesberg .

In Jesberg , the Gilsa passes under the federal highway 3 , leaving the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park, and then reaches the Löwensteiner Grund, a foothill of the Schwalm plain. Here it flows through the Gilsa district in the Neuental community and then flows into the Schwalm at the Bischhausen district .

Hydrology, catchment area and tributaries

Below Jesberg or the "B 3", the Gilsa is managed as a flowing water of the 2nd  order . The responsible entertainment association is the Schwalm water association in Homberg . The catchment area of the Gilsa, which is part of that of the Eder , is 93.595 km² in size , according to the Hesse waterways area directory  . Their tributaries - viewed downstream - include the Norde , Koppbach , Treisbach and Michelbach I and Michelbach II .

tourism

Old stone bridge over the Gilsa in Jesberg

The remains of the aforementioned castles Schönstein , Densberg and Jesberg and the "Drei Höfe" in Neuental-Gilsa of the noble family from and to Gilsa on the lower reaches of the river are worth seeing . The extensive forests in the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park are ideal for hiking. A popular destination is the Kellerwald Tower on the desert garden , which can be reached in a one-hour hike from the Gilsatal. The Kellerwaldsteig crosses the Gilsa twice, on the outskirts of Densberg and near the Schönstein castle ruins. In Jesberg there is a leisure center with a campsite, outdoor swimming pool and various sports facilities right on the Gilsa.
