The Hunsrück in the Kellerwald is 635.9  m above sea level. NHN high, northern sub-peak of the mountain Wüstegarten in the mountain ridge Hoher Keller in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district and the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . It is the highest point in the Bad Zwesten community .

The Hunsrück is located in the southeast of Kellerwald and the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park . It rises about 1.6 km (as the crow flies ) northeast of the desert garden with a summit location on the municipal boundary of the northeastern Bad Zwesten and the southeastern Jesberg (both in the Schwalm-Eder district). Except for the western and northwestern highlands of the mountain, the town and city areas range of west located Haina with the districts Fischbach and Hadde mountain and the northern Bad Wildungen with the district Bergfreiheit (all in Waldeck-Frankenberg).

To the north and northeast, the landscape also drops over the Sauklippe ( 584.4  m ) to the Urff valley , to the east to the Schwalm and to the southeast to the Gilsa . Urff and Gilsa flow into the Schwalm not far from each other around 7.5 km (as the crow flies) east of the mountain. On its eastern flank of the small spring dead ditch as the left source of Bach Gilsa influx Koppenbach and Gilsa inflow Michelbach I .

Natural allocation

Together with the desert garden ( 675.3  m ; southwest) and the Sauklippe ( 584.4  m ; northeast), the Hunsrück forms the mountain ridge "Keller" (also called "Hoher Keller"). This belongs in the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Berg- und Senkenland (No. 34), in the main unit Kellerwald (344) and in the subunit Hoher Kellerwald (344.0) to the natural area Jeust and Keller (344.00).

Protected areas

On the Hunsrück, which is wooded with hardwood, there are parts of the Kellerwald bird sanctuary (VSG no. 4920-401; 263.9949  km² ) and parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area "Hoher Keller" (FFH no. 4920-304; 14.943 km²).

hike

A section of the Kellerwaldsteig (156 km long hiking trail in the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park) runs over the Hunsrück . The Studentenpfad (252 km long hiking trail that leads from Göttingen via Kassel to Gießen ) and Lulluspfad (184 km long long-distance hiking trail, which connects the Edersee with the Rennsteig ) lead close to the mountain .
