Hurray, we surrender!

Hurray, we surrender! A bestseller by Henryk M. Broder , published in 2006, is about the lust for buckling , which on the one hand criticizes the attitude of the governments of Europe towards Islamists and on the other hand criticizes Broder's perceived reluctance and self-censorship of the intellectual left in Germany towards Islam .

content

On the basis of several examples that were current at the time of publication, Broder shows how the West is bowing to the guidelines of Islamists in order not to provoke them further. Such a one-sided "dialogue of cultures" is nonsensical, the freedom of expression, which Broder sees as the core of the Enlightenment and democracy, is gradually being jeopardized. He asks the provocative question "whether respect, consideration and tolerance are the right means in dealing with cultures that are themselves disrespectful ...".

Broder's main example are the Mohammed cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten , which he characterizes as "shocking harmlessness". Anti-Semitic and anti-church caricatures that can sometimes be found in Arab media are far more drastic. The reactions of the West are worrying, giving in to the intimidation and showing understanding for the artificially sparked outrage.

The reasons for this are both fear of fanatics and concern about the trade balance. Compared to the majority of intellectuals such as Günter Grass , Peter Sloterdijk , Peter Scholl-Latour and others. a. there are only a few dissenting voices that "can be counted on the fingers of one hand". Broder includes the Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali , whom he quotes with the sentence: “ I am here to defend the right to offend ” (German: “I am here to defend the right to offend”), and the one in Pakistan grown up writer Ibn Warraq . This had in an appeal “Don't apologize!” U. a. written that without the right to discuss and disagree, Islam remains in its dogmatic medieval castle.

Reviews

Broder's book was received controversially; Both negative and positive reviews were published.

Approving

Broder's book, which has been on the Spiegel's bestseller list for months , has received positive feedback from many quarters. Some examples:

Ulrike Ackermann , like Broder a member of the Axis of the Good , wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung on September 18, 2006:

“Henryk Broder's latest essay comes at just the right time. In his usual astute and sharp-tongued manner, he castigates the widespread attitude of appeasement towards Islam and totalitarian Islamism [...] Broder's essay is a wonderful appeal to defend the freedoms and the achievements of the Western Enlightenment against this threat. "

Johanna Adorján wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on October 8, 2006:

"The book is an astute analysis of society, the reasoning of which is so plausible, so clear, concise and mercilessly compelling that even the worst 'advocates of political correctness' might have problems fighting against it."

The Dutch writer and critic Leon de Winter wrote :

“In this tragicomic essay Broder analyzes the current appeasement politics of Europe. His startling book is haunting, ironic, sad - and the ultimate nightmare for all advocates of political correctness . "

Rejecting

Critics accuse Henryk M. Broder of one-sidedness, hysterics, faulty argumentation, unclean research, racism, trivializing National Socialism and adopting right-wing extremist positions. Some examples of negative reviews:

The political scientist and book critic Denis Scheck judged on the ARD show " Druckfrisch " about Broder's book, which he considers an "extremely manipulative polemic":

"Broder's tirades about the alleged buckling of Europe to the oh-so-bad Muslims are fueling a new crusade mentality and are fundamentally wrong, but secure their author a place of honor at every German regulars table."

In the daily newspaper of November 18, 2006, Daniel Bax describes Broder as an exaggerated hate preacher:

"Ironically, Broder [...] acts exactly like an Islamist agitator, only in reverse."

Even Broder's basic thesis that the West is capitulating does not turn out to be plausible in a sober analysis of current international politics. In this respect, Broder's constant speech of "appeasement" could be regarded as a thoughtless "trivialization of the Nazi past". Behind the amusing and entertaining style, Bax discovers the "icy sharpness of a religious warrior", which is why he describes the book as a "humorous sermon of hate". Robert Misik is in the taz of December 20, 2006, Broder is working on a self-fulfilling prophecy with:

“If you only conjure up the clash of cultures long enough, then in the end you will get it. [...] When declassed Turkish kids take care of Rambazamba in the schoolyard, then it is not the social situation or their lack of future that is to blame, but Islam: 'They' simply do not fit in with 'us'. Lahore, Neukölln, Gaza - it doesn't matter, there is no longer a big difference. "

With regard to Broder's allegations of a growing policy of appeasement towards Islam, Patrick Bahners states that Broder's style, which makes Islam appear as a threat similar to National Socialism , could lead the readers of this book to “consider every little rudeness to a Muslim Act of everyday resistance against the Hitler next door may perceive ”.

Knut Mellenthin in an article for the quarterly Science and Peace :

“Broder makes his contribution to the anti-Islamic crusade by pelting its critics with dirt without even being absolutely clear about what he is actually getting at. Instead of directly promoting the 'World War' proclaimed by the neoconservatives, Broder prefers to blaspheme that Bin Laden is happy about every anti-war demonstration. "

Mellenthin finds Broder's defense of the American prison camp at Guantanamo appalling:

"I think he's just playing the hysteric to serve the purpose he thinks is good: to dump gallons of gasoline into the kind of fire of the 'Clash of Civilizations'."

Broder, who previously fought right-wing populism himself, is now consciously using its means. Kai Doering writes in the SPD magazine Vorwärts :

"Even if it is certainly correct not to strike a 'mea culpa' in advance obedience to those of different faiths [...], one does not have to portray them as traumatized savages with a tendency to world domination, as the author does."

Yasemin Shooman and Riem Spielhaus see Broder's book as influenced by Gisèle Littman , a prominent figure in anti-Islamic circles, and their future scenarios of a Europe ruled by Islam. It is noteworthy that Broder portrayed Islamization as a done deal, in which, at best, the duration of the process could be influenced.

Answer Broder

In a conversation with journalist Roger de Weck on Swiss television , Broder defended himself against the accusation that he had not kept the line between polemics and generalization in his book, referring to a “spontaneous outrage collective of Muslims”, which in turn was a collective, claim undifferentiated "offense".
