IIHF World Women's Challenge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IIHF World Women's Challenge was the official name of a women's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF in 2002 for those national teams that had not qualified for the 2002 Olympic Ice Hockey Tournament or the previous qualifying round.

Although the tournament was open to national teams from all over the world and a replacement for the World Championships of the newly founded Divisions I and II, which were canceled due to the Olympic Games , only seven teams, all of them European teams, registered for the tournament, which was due to the previous World Cup in 2001 took place in two divisions. The Division I played with four nations from 8 to 10 February 2002 just before the start of the Olympic Games in the Dutch Tilburg , while in Division II, only three teams - Slovenia as the fourth team had canceled here in the short term - in English Kingston upon Hullafter the Salt Lake City Games (March 8-10, 2002).

Presumably due to the low interest shown by the national ice hockey associations, the IIHF decided not to host such a competition for the 2006 Olympic tournament.
