Ian Burns (born April 19, 1939 in Aberdeen , † December 6, 2015 in Larbert ) was a Scottish football player . Burns played from 1957 to 1966 for Aberdeen FC 141 games in the Scottish Football League Division One and ended his career in 1970 in lower class football.

Career

Burns came in June 1957 from the local Aberdeen club Banks o 'Dee to the Scottish first division club FC Aberdeen . He came there immediately as the successor to Harry Yorston , who had ended his career at the age of 27 for professional reasons, as a left half-forward on August 10, 1957 in the Scottish League Cup against Queen of the South to his debut and scored a 5-1 goal -Win at. After losing his place in the team over the course of the season, he returned to the team at the end of the season as a right wing runner, a position he continued to occupy. Burns remained a part-time professional throughout his footballing career and worked in the insurance industry. Although he was also temporarily restricted by performing his military service, he played more than half of the season games for Aberdeen in the seasons 1958/59 to 1964/65, the only exception was the season 1962/63, when he was due to a recurrent cartilage injury could only play a few games in the reserve team.

In terms of sport, Aberdeen was only moderately successful during Burns' active time, in the league two sixth places ( 1961 and 1963 ) were the best results. In 1959 Aberdeen reached the final of the Scottish FA Cup , but although Burns was still used in the semi-final win against Third Lanark , Ken Brownlee was preferred in the 1-3 final defeat against FC St. Mirren . In addition, Burns played in the 1964 Summer Cup in the finals against Hibernian Edinburgh , when they missed winning the title by a 1: 3 defeat in the second replay game. In December 1958 he was nominated for an U-23 international match against Wales, but had to pass due to injury. In January 1961 he was also called up in a selection of the Scottish Football League for a game against the Scottish national team, but remained as a substitute without use.

After he was last used in September 1965 and he had lost his place in the team to the Dane Jens Petersen under coach Eddie Turnbull , Burns moved to Division Two at Brechin City in the summer of 1966 . With the club he placed himself regularly at the bottom of the table for the next four years before ending his career after a brief stint at FC Deveronvale .

Burns died in December 2015 at the age of 76 in his home town of Larbert .
