Ian Flanagan (born January 15, 1982 in St Asaph , Denbighshire , Wales ) is a retired British tennis player .

Life

Flanagan was born on January 15, 1982 in St Asaph (Denbighshire) to Sheila and George Flanagan and grew up in the village of Graianrhyd . He started playing tennis at the age of six. From 1993 to 1997 Flanagan went to Ysgol Brynhyfryd , a secondary school in Ruthin . Between 1998 and 2000 he suffered from Pfeiffer glandular fever .

Career

At the 1996 Youth Olympic Games , Flanagan won a gold medal . Before 2004 he never played in an ATP Tour tournament , but his victory in three sets 6: 7, 6: 2 and 6: 3 against the Serbian Nenad Zimonjić in qualifying for the 2004 Queen's Club Championships for qualify for the main round. At that time, Flanagan was 866th in the tennis world rankings . In the first round of the tournament he defeated the Australian Mark Philippoussis in straight sets 7: 6 and 7: 6. In the second round, Flanagan won against Romanian Victor Hănescu in two sets with 7: 6 and 6: 3. In the round of 16 he met French Sébastien Grosjean , but lost to him after 50 minutes in two sets with 2: 6 and 0: 6.
