Ian Stewart, Baron Stewartby

Bernard Harold Ian Halley Stewart, Baron Stewartby Kt PC RD FRSE FSA FBA (born August 10, 1935 - March 3, 2018 ) was a British economic manager , numismatist and politician of the Conservative Party , who was a member of the House of Commons from 1974 to 1992 and was a member of the House of Lords from 1992 to 2015 .

Life

Military and professional career and member of the House of Commons

After attending school, Stewart trained as a reserve officer of the Royal Naval Reserve between 1954 and 1956 and was most recently promoted to lieutenant commander . After further training, he was a broker at Seccombe Marshall & Campion from 1959 to 1960 and later director of the British Numismatic Society from 1965 to 1975.

After he had run unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in the general election of June 18, 1970 in the constituency of North Hammersmith for the Conservative Party, he became director of the private bank Brown, Shipley & Co in 1971 and worked there until 1983. In 1972 he was awarded the Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve .

In the general election on February 28, 1974 Stewart was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and first represented the constituency of Hitchin , before he represented the constituency of Hertfordshire North after the election of June 9, 1983 to the general election on April 9, 1992 . From 1977 to 1979 he was a member of the House Committee on Public Spending and at the same time between 1978 and 1979 he was the spokesman for the opposition faction of the Conservative Tories for the banking law.

On November 12, 2015, he declared his retirement and left the House of Lords.
