Mário Gibson Alves Barboza (born March 13, 1918 in Olinda , † November 26, 2007 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian diplomat and foreign minister .

Life

Mário Gibson Alves Barbosa studied law in Recife until 1937 . In 1939 he joined the Itamaraty foreign service . From 1941 to 1943 he was Vice Consul in Houston . From 1950 to 1952 he was secretary of legation Class Three in Washington, DC was from 1952 to 1954, he Legation Secretary First Class in Brussels , where 1952 he temporarily d'affaires was. From 1955 to 1959 he was a delegation counselor in Buenos Aires , where he was temporarily chargé d'affaires in 1956. He was a delegation counselor to the United Nations organizations in Geneva . From 1961 to September 1962 he was the office manager of Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco . From December 5, 1962 to November 4, 1966 he was ambassador to Vienna . From December 5, 1966 to December 20, 1967 he was ambassador to Asunción and was involved in the solution of a border conflict between the two governments. From 1968 to 1969 he was general secretary of the Itamaraty. From February 21, 1969 to October 17, 1969 he was Ambassador to Washington, DC From October 31, 1969 to March 15, 1974 he was Foreign Secretary in the government of Emílio Garrastazu Médici . From 1974 to July 1977 he was ambassador to Athens . From July 1977 to 1982 he was ambassador to Rome . From 1982 to 1986 he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s . In 1986 he was retired.

Honors

In 1971 Gibson Barboza was awarded the Trinity Cross , the highest honor in Trinidad and Tobago at the time .
