Every morning the half-blind Midge Carter, who despite his old age still earns his living as a janitor in an apartment building, tries to read his newspaper in New York's Central Park ; however, he is constantly interrupted by the similarly old Nat Moyer, who ponders the past.
When Midge is about to be retired by the property manager, Nat persuades him to protest. Nat even pretends to be Midges lawyer.
