Ida Applebroog

IDA APPLEBROOG (* 11. November 1929 in Bronx , New York as Ida Apple Tree ) is an American sculptor and painter .

Life

Applebroog studied at the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Science between 1947 and 1950 and received an honorary doctorate from the School of Art Institute of Chicago , where she also taught from 1966 to 1968. Applebroog worked as a freelance sculptor for the next four years before accepting a teaching position at the University of California at San Diego in 1974. At the same time she found her passion in painting . Today she lives and works in New York City .

In 1998 she was a MacArthur Fellow . In 2014 Ida Applebroog was elected a member (NA) of the National Academy , New York.

In 2016 Applebroog was portrayed by her daughter, underground filmmaker Beth B ( Beth Billingsley , * 1955) in the documentary Call Her Applebroog .
