Ilie Bărbulescu (born June 24, 1957 in Piteşti , Argeş district ; † February 1, 2020 there ) was a Romanian football player and coach . He played a total of 357 games in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , and came up with five international matches. Bărbulescu won the 1986 European Cup with Steaua Bucharest .
Career as a player
Bărbulescu began playing football in his hometown of Piteşti at FC Argeş . In 1974, he moved at the age of 17 years in the first team and came on November 9, 1974 against FCM Resita his first appearance in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . In his second season he became a regular player and was instrumental in the fact that FC Argeş won the championship in 1979 and had reached the runner-up a year earlier.
After FC Argeş could not build on previous successes in the 1981/82 season , Bărbulescu left the club and moved to FC Olt Scorniceşti . In the summer of 1983 he was admitted as a student at the University of Craiova , but his move to Universitatea Craiova failed due to the objection of Lică Bărbulescu , a brother-in-law of Nicolae Ceaușescus .
Already in the winter break of the 1983/84 season he left FC Olt again and joined Petrolul Ploieşti , who was fighting relegation at the time. But Petrolul could no longer prevent this with Bărbulescu.
In 1984 Bărbulescu got the opportunity to move to Steaua Bucharest , one of the best clubs in Europe at the time. In the three years that he stayed in Bucharest, he was able to achieve his greatest successes. In addition to three championships and two cup victories, the biggest success of a Romanian club ever was achieved in 1986 when it won the European Cup . The European Supercup followed in the same year .
After Bărbulescu was no longer used regularly, he returned to Petrolul Ploieşti in 1987. Here he was just as little used as at FC Argeş Piteşti, to which he moved during the winter break in 1987/88. After two more positions in Divizia B at Dacia Piteşti and Callatis Mangalia , he ended his active career in 1991.
National team
Bărbulescu came to five missions for the Romanian national football team , but without scoring a goal. He played his first international match on May 13, 1979 against Cyprus . The other missions followed sporadically until 1987.
Career as a coach
Bărbulescu worked in 2005 as a coach in the youth division of FC Argeş Piteşti. He later worked as a youth coach for Steaua Bucharest .
