Illogicist is a technical death metal band from Aosta in northern Italy .

history

In the summer of 1997, guitarist Luca Minieri and drummer Remy Curtaz founded a project together in which both wanted to realize their musical ideas. Special emphasis was placed on unusual, "illogical" rhythms that are strongly influenced by jazz and fusion . According to Minieri, the band name does not refer directly to the music, but rather to the overall concept of the band. He later said:

"The logician [English" logicist "] is the one who teaches logic; "Illogicist" does not exist in the English language, but it can still mean the exact opposite, that is, the one who teaches the illogical. "

After bassist Roberto Zeppa joined the band a little later, Illogicist prepared for their first release. A few weeks before the start of recording, Fabio Filippone added another guitarist to the band. Finally, in 2002, an EP called Polymorphism Of Death was released. This EP had the character of a demo , but was released regularly and praised in the scene for its good production and the complex, yet catchy song structures, among other things.

Shortly after the recordings, Zeppa and Filippone left the band; the latter to take care of his black metal band Nefarium . The vacant seats were taken a little later by Diego Ambrosi (guitar) and Emilio Dattolo (bass). During the preparations for the next release, Illogicist's music evolved in a more technical direction. A second EP, Dissonant Perspective , was finally completed in 2003. With this EP, the band succeeded in gaining greater recognition in the Italian death metal scene for the first time. Supported by a variety of live performances, Illogicist was able to sign a record deal for an album with the Crash Music label .

The recordings for the debut album took place a little later in Minieri's own studio, which at that time was only in a project stage. Nevertheless, the recordings were completed without any problems. The final production was carried out in the Finnvox Studios at the end of 2003 . The album was finally released on July 13, 2004 under the title Subjected .

After drummer Curtaz left the band shortly afterwards, Sergio Ponti was introduced as the new drummer. He accompanied the band on a subsequent European tour. After the expiration of the record contract with Crash Music, the band switched to Willowtip Records , as they felt poorly supported by their old label.

The Insight Eye (from 2007)

Before the recordings for the second album, Ponti left the band. While looking for a new drummer, Minieri asked Marco Minnemann ( necrophagist ), whom he had met a few years earlier while recording a teaching DVD from Drum Workshop . He agreed and recorded his parts in California to pass them on to the band. The remaining recordings were then carried out again in Minieri's now fully-fledged Dissonant Studio. The final production took place again in the Finnvox Studios.

The album The Insight Eye was finally released on July 10, 2007. In Europe the album was released through Candlelight Records , in the USA through Willowtip Records. The album was highly praised in various reviews and the technical and brutal, but still understandable and melodic music was highlighted again and again. The cover artwork for The Insight Eye was designed by Mike Bohatch, who had already worked for Dew-Scented , among others .

For Illogicist it was not possible financially at that time to book a successful musician like Marco Minnemann for tours and the like, so that the position on the drums was still vacant. In September 2007, Alessandro Tinti was introduced as the new permanent drummer.

In August 2010, recordings began for the third album entitled Unconsciousness of Living , which was released on November 1, 2011 via Willowtip Records. In Germany the album will be released on January 13, 2012 via Hammerheart Records.

style

Illogicist plays complex, technical Death Metal , but at the same time attention is paid to catchy song structures. The music can also be assigned to progressive death metal through a multitude of abstract rhythmic elements . The band has repeatedly referred to this style as "rhythmic asymmetry ". In many reviews, the band's music is directly compared to Death's later works in terms of complexity; the album Individual Thought Patterns deserves a special mention. However, it is also criticized that the music simply consists of a string of different bars without real creativity.

On the third album, The Unconsciousness of Living , this style is largely retained. A stylistic similarity to Individual Thought Patterns can be found here even more clearly, but references to Cynic or Atheist also appear occasionally .

Both the music and the lyrics are largely written by Luca Minieri. The texts deal almost exclusively with philosophical and spiritual topics. In addition to Death , Atheist and Cynic , Minieri also mentions Spastic Ink and Theory in Practice as musical influences . He names Chuck Schuldiner as a musical role model , who also had the greatest influence on his guitar playing.
