Hour of Penance (English for hour of penance ) is an Italian death metal band from Rome .

history

The band was founded in Rome in 1999 by Mike Viti (vocals, bass), Enrico Schettino (guitar) and Mauro Mercurio (drums) as a black / death metal cover band . Shortly afterwards, Francesco De Honestis joined as the second guitarist. After the release of Cannibal Corpse's Bloodthirst album , the band changed their style to brutal death metal .

A first demo with five tracks was released in 2000. With this, Hour of Penance achieved international attention in the death metal scene for the first time. At the end of 2001 De Honestis left the band for some time and was replaced by Stefano 'Saul' Morabito.

The debut album Disturbance was released on April 28, 2003 on the Spanish label Xtreem Music , with which the band had signed a record deal in 2002. The album begins with an intro, which bears the German title “Der Zorn Gottes” and uses a language sample from the film Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes . The following album also features a German title, "Egomaniac". After the album was released, De Honestis finally left the band; Giulio Moschini took his place on the guitar.

The second album Pageantry for Martyrs followed on June 1, 2005. Alex 'Necrotorture' Manco took over the vocals on this album. Viti left the band after the recordings; after a while his position on bass was filled again by Silvano 'Nightorn' Leone. In 2006, Hour of Penance went on a European tour with Krisiun . Guitarist Schettino and singer Manco left the band after this tour, whereupon Francesco 'Scythe' Paoli joined the band as singer. The seat on the second guitar remained vacant.

In early 2007, a second demo with three tracks was released after the record deal with Xtreem Records expired. Through this demo the band got some offers from different record labels; in April 2007, Hour of Penance was finally able to sign a new contract with Unique Leader Records .

On February 23, 2008, the third album The Vile Conception was released . The album was recorded at the 16th Cellar Studios in Rome under the direction of Stefano Morabito, who had previously played in the band for some time. Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse put this album in his personal top 5 list of 2008 and judged: "A killer album I would recommend for all death metal fans." The album was followed by a European tour with Origin and Impaled .

In mid-2009, founding member Schettino returned to the Hour of Penance as guitarist, but left the band after a short time.

The fourth album Paradogma was released on March 31, 2010. It was also recorded with Stefano Morabito at the 16th Cellar Studios and published on Unique Leader Records. The album cover was designed by Gyula Havancsàk, who has worked for Destruction and Annihilator , among others . This album was followed by their own European tour and a joint tour with, among others, Cephalic Carnage and Psycroptic .

In June 2010 it was announced that singer Paoli had left the band after drummer Mercurio had left the band shortly before. Paoli gave as a reason, among other things, to no longer be able to combine his two posts as singer with Hour of Penance and as drummer with Fleshgod Apocalypse . Some time later, Paolo 'Hell-IO-Kabbalus' Pieri was introduced as the new singer, and Simone 'Arconda' Piras as drummer.

In early 2011, Hour of Penance signed a record deal with Prosthetic Records . The fifth studio album, entitled Sedition , was released in North America on March 26th, and in Europe on April 6th, 2012 - Good Friday . In the course of the album promotion, a video for the song Sedition through Scorn was also released in February .

On May 13, 2014, the studio album Regicide was released.

style

Hour of Penance plays relatively complex, brutality and speed-oriented Death Metal ( Brutal Death Metal ), which is occasionally enriched with breaks; only rarely is the speed slowed down. Occasionally, Hour of Penance is compared to bands like Nile or Krisiun . Paradogma's “Apotheosis” piece contains some progressive elements; this provides loud band but an exception. As a stylistic influences guitarist Giulio Moschini is Morbid Angel , Hate Eternal , Cannibal Corpse , Suffocation and Nile on, also in particular the album Beneath the Remains of Sepultura .

The majority of the songs have been written by Moschini since he joined. He distances himself from the "Guts'n'Gore" texts common in Death Metal and from those about "Satan, Geister and Mickey Mouse". Instead, attempts are made to write mature song texts that deal primarily with criticism of religion and political and philosophical topics. On the album The Vile Conception , the sentence "The fear of the invisible is the natural seed of what everyone calls religion" is quoted from the work Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes .

All the lyrics on the album Paradogma are from singer Paoli. Here, too, the texts deal critically with religion. The album title is made up of the ancient Greek words para- and dogma , which means, freely translated, "counter-dogma". On this album, the band adds some varied elements to their music but remains true to their basic style. In a review on metal.de , the author puts it as follows:

"If the last body of the four-wheeler only had an accelerator pedal and, if at all, a steering wheel, the new 'Paradogma' model now also has a brake pedal and a gear shift."
