Ilse Lehiste (until March 8, 1935 Lest , born January 31, 1922 in Tallinn , † December 25, 2010 in Columbus (Ohio) ) was an American linguist of Estonian origin, whose specialty was phonetics .

Life

Lehiste graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1941 and studied from 1942 at the University of Tartu in Estonia, which was then occupied by Germany . In 1944 she moved to Germany, where she studied German and Slavic studies in Leipzig and Hamburg . After completing her doctorate for the English poet William Morris in Hamburg, she went to the USA in 1949 and initially worked as a language teacher in Salina (Kansas) and Detroit . From 1955 she studied again, this time at the University of Michigan , where she received her doctorate in 1959 with a linguistic thesis.

After a few more years at the University of Michigan, she became a lecturer at Ohio State University in Columbus in 1963 , where she received a professorship two years later and remained until her retirement. In addition to numerous international honors, she was President of the Linguistic Society of America in 1980.

Lehiste's main research focus was acoustic phonetics, from the area of ​​which she presented studies on many languages. In addition, she dealt with language contact, metrics and prosody, especially in Estonian and Finno-Ugric folk poetry, as well as linguistic change. After her retirement and the political changes at the end of the 1980s, she worked increasingly with Estonian linguists and presented numerous studies on Finno-Ugric languages .

Ilse Lehiste was also interested in literature and has dealt with Estonian literature in various essays. She also wrote poetry at a young age, which she published in 1989.
