Ilse Margarete Asta Helene von Stach , actually Stach von Goltzheim (born February 17, 1879 in the Pröbsting house near Borken ; † August 22, 1941 in Münster ) was a German writer .

Life

Ilse von Stach was the daughter of the Protestant manor owner Baron Georg Stach von Goltzheim (* July 25, 1849) and his first wife Margarete, born von Barby (* August 12, 1856, † August 20, 1888).

After the early death of her mother, she grew up with relatives in Aurich and in a women's monastery in Altenburg . At the age of 19 she published her first volume of poetry. In Berlin she trained as a teacher. There she also worked in the circle of the artists' association Die Kommenden . In Berlin she met her first husband and went to Paris with him. The couple had a daughter there, but the marriage failed. After the divorce, she returned to Berlin. There she married the polar explorer Theodor Lerner in 1902 , with whom she had two sons (Klaus and Thomas). This marriage also ended in divorce. She moved to Rome in 1905 and critically examined her Protestant faith. In 1908 she converted to Catholicism. In the same year she met her third husband, the art critic Martin Wackernagel . They married in 1912. First they settled in Planegg and then in Leipzig . The marriage resulted in Peter (1913–1958), Karl Martin (1914–2004) and Maria Elisabeth (1919–2018). They lived in Münster from 1921. The written estate of Ilse von Stach is kept at the University and State Library of Münster .

A street in Borken is named after the writer.

Works

Ilse von Stach wrote dramas , novels , fairy tales and poetry . Her best-known work, the Christmas fairy tale Das Christ-Elflein , was created in 1906 under the literary influence of Gerhart Hauptmann . In the same year it was set to music by the composer Hans Pfitzner and premiered in Munich . In many of her works, von Stach dealt with religious problems.
