There are many apartments in my father's house is a German film documentary by Hajo Schomerus from 2010.

content

The film takes place exclusively in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher . He describes the Church of the Holy Sepulcher as a phenomenon: on the one hand it is a place where people with different interests can live together extremely complicated, on the other hand it is also a place of great passion for the different protagonists of the film.

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher or Church of the Holy Sepulcher is the name given to the church in the old city of Jerusalem , which is located at the traditional location of the crucifixion and the tomb of Jesus .

It is in the hands of six Christian denominations: the main administration of the church is held by the Greek Orthodox , the Roman Catholic Church , represented by the Franciscan Order , and the Armenian Apostolic Church . In the 19th century the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch , the Copts and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church were added. They were only given a few smaller shrines and tasks, the Ethiopians only live in a small group on one roof of the church. This Deir al-Sultan monastery is also claimed by the Copts and has been in danger of collapsing since 2004. However, the dispute prevents renovation. Protestant denominations are not represented in the church; with the Church of the Redeemer they have their own church on the Via Dolorosa .

Because of the disputes, the Muslim Joudeh family has kept the keys to the church for several centuries, and the Nusseibeh family, who are also Muslim, open the main door in the morning and lock it again in the evening. In addition, family members often acted as mediators. The Joudehs and Nusseibehs have been associated with the Church at least since the time of Saladin . They too have different points of view as to which of them has the more important task.

The Israeli authorities left the stipulated division ( status quo ) after the Old City came under their administration after the Six Day War in 1967. The complicated ownership structure makes structural measures very difficult, as any change could result in a violation of the status. For example, a wooden ladder that has long since become pointless stands on the facade above the main portal and cannot be removed. In the 19th century it was used by monks to enter the church when the gates were officially closed. Efforts have been made to remove them for many decades, but it is not regulated who has the right to do so.

Not only the property in the church is precisely regulated, but also who is allowed to pray where, when and for how long. For example, the grave has to be cleared by the Orthodox for the daily Franciscan procession. The situation always becomes particularly critical at Easter, when all churches celebrate the solemnity of the Resurrection. Since the Catholics rarely celebrate on the date of the Eastern Church, there is primarily a conflict among the Orthodox. So there are occasional fights between monks because of the non-observance of the prayer order. Monks of all denominations remain in the church even during the closing times at night.

Quotes

“But at night, when the involuntary community is locked in the church, the monks pray in front of the grave. Then the church is transformed into a mystical place of devotion and longing for fulfilled faith. "

- Hajo Schomerus

"The history of the Greek Orthodox patriarchate is the epitome of salvation history."

"When the full organ sounds here, then it's even better to be Catholic."

- Father Robert Jauch OFM in the film

"The danger is always there - that Jesus is standing next to me and I hit him on the shoulder and say:" What are you doing here? ""

- Father Robert Jauch OFM at the end of the trailer for the film

Reviews

“It's like the trip to Jerusalem, funny and sad at the same time, when the all too human reigns in the time-honored walls, where processions, ceremonies and liturgies take place close to one another, next to one another, one above the other. Then the prayers and chants culminate in a shrill cacophony, until one believes that one is in the confusion of languages in the Tower of Babel. And in between: a rare moment of silence when the Palestinian key guard closes the doors that weigh tons. But Shomerus did not film instructions on how to desecrate the father's house. He remains respectfully at a distance and does not question faith. It is the human interaction or often against one another that he attentively registers. "

“The Church of the Holy Sepulcher of Jesus in Jerusalem is the scene of an equally fascinating and ethnographically highly explosive agreement between various Christian denominations such as the Copts, Franciscans and Greek Orthodox. In calm and haunting images, the documentary shows that coming together at this important religious site is more of a conflict-ridden coexistence than a peaceful coexistence. With great meticulousness, visual density and camera work of the highest quality, the structures of this strange microcosm are captured, the traditional rituals observed up close and the reactions of tourists are also reflected. This creates a very idiosyncratic tension and very interesting sociological questions are raised. An extraordinary document! "
