In Color is the debut album by British artist Jamie xx , which was released on May 29, 2015 under the Young Turks label. It is the second album of his solo career.

background

Smith was a founding member of the London indie band The xx and was responsible for operating the drum computer and mixing. He later published his first remixes . In 2011 he released the remix album We're New Here together with producer Gil Scott-Heron . Finally, In Color was announced as Smith's first own album in March 2015. It was created over a period of five years. In May 2014, the first single Girl appeared together with Sleep Sound . Loud Places , Gosh and I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) followed in March and May .

production

Smith himself was responsible for the production of all titles. For SeeSaw , Four Tet is also given as co-producer. Tom Elmhirst and David Wrench were also involved in the mix. The artwork is by Smith and Philip Lee. The audio mastering was done by Mandy Parnell. Smith intended an album that sounded like it didn't belong to any particular era (Make an album that sounded like it did not come from any particular era). The album genre of the album cannot be precisely assigned. It's a mix of UK garage , house and rave.

Cover

The cover of the album is reminiscent of a color wheel . It consists of a total of 24 segments, each of which is colored differently. They are arranged in such a way that the transitions appear fluid. In the lower left quarter there is a white, center-aligned rectangle. The website theinterns.net associated each color with a title , depending on the symbolism and mood. This idea is supported by the fact that the pre-released singles Loud Places and I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) , as well as the later club version of SeeSaw, each have a quarter of the album cover of In Color on their own cover. However, the white rectangle remains in its original position. The title of the album can be associated with the cover and the music it contains.

publication

The album was first released on iTunes on May 29th. In addition to the CD version, a vinyl edition and a three-part deluxe vinyl with a printed front and two bonus tracks are also sold.

Reviews

The reviews of In Color were mostly positive. At Metacritic , the album received an average rating of 87 out of 100 points based on 39 ratings.

Music videos

Several music videos followed the album.

For Gosh two music videos were released. The first shows surface images of Mars . The video has few cuts and slow tracking shots. The second video comes from the French director Romain Gavras , who is known for his socially critical work. It shows fictional forms of religion , worship and the cult of the leader . An Asian high-rise estate is shown with a replica of the Parisian Eiffel Tower in the middle . The 400 or so extras , who look the same, gather around an albinist and worship him.

In the music video for Loud Places , Smith can be seen skateboarding through London at night with The xx band member Romy Medley Croft . It was released on March 27, 2015.

There is also a music video for Sleep Sound . Directed by Sophia Mattoli. You can see 13 members of the Manchester Deaf Center. One of the basic aspects is the connection between silence and music.
