Independent title

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Independent title is a term coined in the media industry for the start-up of German magazines , behind which there is no major publisher or media group . Often the founders are an association of individuals.

In 2003, a wave of founders began in the print market after media companies laid off journalists , creative people and business people due to falling advertising and sales revenues and hardly invested in innovations. At the same time, the means of production for creating a magazine became more and more affordable due to the years of mechanization and digitization of the publishing industry.

Some of the magazines are characterized by the courage to deal with special topics and unusual designs. Often it is about lifestyle, fashion and culture. Due to the creative mix of contents, many titles can often not be assigned to any conventional journal genre.

The best-known titles include "Achtung", " Dummy ", founded in 2004 by a former Spiegel editor, "Monopol", "Sleek" and "Qvest". Most magazines are based in Berlin or Hamburg .

Quotation from a press release by the Lead Award jury (January 2007), which honors magazines: "The independent titles are surprisingly strong again. As in previous years, they have received an abundance of nominations and thus place their creative pioneering role on the German one Proof of the magazine market. "

The independent magazines mare (since 1997) and brand eins (since 1999) are often cited as pioneers of this genre .
