action

In the distant future, the earth has reached its limit in terms of available living space and resources. Lucrative jobs are now only available in the colonies in the vastness of space and with the Slipstream Police, which is organized in two bases on the American east and west coast. This troop can be beamed to any known location using a teleport system. However, this often leads to paradoxical time shifts when teams seem to have been gone for only a few minutes, but subjectively several days have passed before they are "extracted". This is used by some corrupt officials for so-called "dirty transports", which effectively mean time travel. To do this, the transponder beacon implanted in the neck of the soldiers must be hacked.

Unsuccessful computer game developer and father-to-be, Whit Carmichael, joins one of these Slipstream units at the beginning of the main storyline. He witnesses how a team is beamed to an emergency operation and apparently seconds later comes back partly seriously injured and completely insane during its extraction. An automatically initiated quarantine lock with the introduction of poison gas causes Carmichael and a comrade to make an emergency “dirty jump”, whereby they are sent to the same mission location according to the system settings: the Infini mine colony.

As a result, an SRS team is now set up to investigate the incident and to rescue Carmichael. During the briefing you learn that Infini is the most distant human settlement in which a unique mass is being mined. This mass, which could serve as a new source of energy for mankind, probably caused a deflagration.

In addition to the "extraction" of the missing Carmichael, the aim is to prevent a significant amount of this "mass" from being slipped onto the earth from there, which in view of the incidents would mean a catastrophe. The SRS team finds the system undamaged, life support and air conditioning seem to have failed. Numerous corpses, some of which are bloodless and some of them torn, lie around frozen. Suddenly, however, life support starts again and you find Carmichael, who had isolated himself in the control area of the plant. He claims to have killed the other colonists, who barbarically attacked each other in madness, by switching off the air conditioning. The captain of the team promises him to take him with him in the course of the automatic extraction, if the "bomb" that has already been dispatched can be stopped beforehand. Understand his actions, however, and don't blame him.

At first they manage to stop this bomb, but then the team is attacked by the last, apparently surviving colonist. Here the "pathogen" is transmitted with the blood that is splashing around and the SRS team begins to fight each other. Carmichael himself, haunted by hallucinations and attacks of aggression, moves from remaining squad member to squad member. Here he finds out that the facility known as the mine actually had the task of researching the unknown deep-frozen substance. It had meanwhile been found out that the mass interacted with human tissue. It awakens stem cells and causes the individuals to fight each other, apparently with the aim of leaving “the alpha organism”, i.e. the strongest. On the other hand, the infection also leads to the body fighting against itself, apparently with the aim of being just one particularly strong cell. This also goes hand in hand with intellectual disputes in the same sense.

Carmichael realizes that he is infected himself and seeks help from the team doctor. However, she had previously performed a dirty abortion on herself when she realized that she and her unborn child were infected. She dies before his eyes. After Carmichael had to kill the last rage squad member, he understands that he is now this "Alpha". Since he is afraid of losing his mind and of being automatically extracted back to earth with the pathogen in the body, he commits suicide. The biomorphic mass recognizes through this that it cannot “select” a “better person” as a vehicle for itself by using only strength, mental short circuits and the will to survive. Social affairs, love for one another and willingness to make sacrifices are also absolutely important human qualities. Eventually, she heals all injured and dead so that they can be slipped back to Earth in time. In the transporter room, the team members can still see that the "crowd" has formed new people who have come to say goodbye.

Back on Earth, no relevant contamination is found. Carmichael returns to his wife - only a few hours have passed.

reception

Infini received mostly passable ratings. The critics of the program magazine TV Spielfilm describe the strip under the comment that Alien meets Event Horizon as "quite ok". They further sum up: “Good look, the story is not fully fermented”.

Infini is not reinventing the wheel, but it certainly has its merits. If the slow beginning were cut away, a slightly better film would have come out [...] Good action sequences that convince because they appear authentic [...] The actors are not outstanding, but they are quite appropriate for their roles. Infini is certainly not a film that one would have waited for, but if you are in the mood for science fiction again, it could be much worse. "

- Peter Osteried : gamona.de

"[...] A slickly made, utterly incomprehensible potboiler [...]"

"[...] A routine made, completely incomprehensible tear [...]"

- Harry Windsor : hollywoodreporter.com

On kino.de, Infini is rated as a "science fiction adventure based on tried and tested genre patterns with a few original ideas of its own".
