Inga Kalna

Inga Kalna (born 1972 in Riga ) is a Latvian opera singer with a soprano voice .

Life

Kalna studied singing and musicology at the Latvian Music Academy and the Royal Academy of Music in London. After her successful debut as Pamina in Mozart's Magic Flute at the Latvian National Opera , she sang at this house a. a. also Gilda in Rigoletto and Mimi in La Bohème , as well as the title roles in Alcina and Lucia di Lammermoor . She has won the Latvian Theater Prize twice and the Latvian Grand Music Prize three times .

In 1999 she became a member of the International Opera Studio at the Hamburg State Opera and was a member of the ensemble at this house from 2001 to 2007, where she still appears as a guest. In Hamburg, the singer demonstrated the breadth of her repertoire, which ranges from the baroque to the present day. In the Hanseatic city she sang Barena in Janáček's Jenůfa and Xenia in Boris Godunow , Olympia, Antonia and Stella in Les Contes d'Hoffmann , Figaro -Gräfin, Gilda, Mimi and Lucia, Alcina and Adina in L'elisir d ' amore and was able to achieve lasting personal success as Violetta Valéry in La traviata . She also appeared in the premieres of Rossini's Il turco in Italia (as Fiorilla), Hindemith's Mathis der Maler and Mozart's Idomeneo (as Ilia). In Hamburg she also sang in new productions of Henze's We come to the River , Poulenc 's Dialogues des Carmélites and Keiser's Der ridiculous Prince Jodelet

Further engagements took her to the De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Ghent, the opera houses of Tampere, Lausanne and Toulouse, and the Bolshoi in Moscow. In 2006 she made her debut as First Lady in Mozart's Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival , in 2007 as Handel's Alcina at the Opéra National de Paris , and in 2009 in the same role at La Scala in Milan. Kalna works closely with two conductors who have become known as baroque experts: she made her debut under Marc Minkowski as Alcina at the Vienna State Opera , as Piacere in Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Berlin State Opera , and as Cinna in Lucio Silla at the Salzburg Mozart Week , at the Salzburg Festival and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Under René Jacobs she made guest appearances at the Dresden Music Festival , the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music , at the Berlin State Opera and at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence .

In addition to the roles mentioned, her extensive repertoire also includes Mozart's Donna Anna , Elettra and Fiordiligi , Verdi's Desdemona , and the title roles in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and Handel's Agrippina .

Kalna can also be heard as a lieder and concert singer, for example in passions by Bach and in masses by Beethoven, Gounod, Mozart, Brahms, Verdi and Fauré, as well as in Strauss' Four Last Songs or Mahler's Fourth . She has worked with well-known conductors such as Gerd Albrecht , Sir Colin Davis , Andrea Marcon , Ingo Metzmacher , Riccardo Muti , Trevor Pinnock , Stefan Soltesz , Marc Soustrot and Simone Young .
