The Chefsache initiative is a network of executives from business, science, the public sector and the media that was founded in 2015 under the patronage of Angela Merkel . Under the motto “Together for more equal opportunities”, management board members and board members of companies as well as heads of scientific, socio-economic and public institutions campaign for equal opportunities for women and men in top positions. In 2019 the initiative has 27 members from various German companies.

The Chefsache initiative advocates a balanced gender ratio in management positions. The aim of the initiative is to initiate a fundamental change in the world of work and to establish a new culture of appreciation in companies and institutions.

The Chefsache initiative aims to raise awareness of the extent to which society and the economy are still shaped by outdated role models and how women are consequently not able to get into top positions.

The term “top priority” is intended to make it clear that the issue of equal opportunities is of particular importance to the executives of the members of the initiative. The term also shows that men in Germany are still in the majority as bosses. Men are therefore also the addressees of the initiative, as a balanced gender ratio in management positions is a gain for everyone involved.

In addition to the members, there are also the “friends” of the initiative. These are mostly small to medium-sized companies and organizations that pursue the same goals with regard to equal opportunities and feel committed to the initiative.

Annual themes

Every year the Chefsache initiative focuses on a specific topic in the area of ​​equal opportunities. This is examined in a study and published as a result report. In addition, the initiative has been organizing an annual conference on the respective focus topic since 2017. It also places the topic of equal opportunities for women and men in management positions at conferences, trade fairs and also in its own formats such as round tables or dialogue events.
