International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad

The International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad ( IOAA ) is an annual international student competition . It is one of the international science olympiads and deals with the scientific fields of astronomy and astrophysics . The Olympiad was created as a spin-off from the International Astronomy Olympiad to expand the scope of the organization.

The first IOAA took place in November / December 2007 in Chiang Mai , Thailand. Germany has participated in the competition as one of 46 countries since 2019.

history

The first Olympiad took place from November 30th to December 9th, 2007 in the city of Chiang Mai (Thailand) with 21 participating countries. The International Council, consisting of the team leaders, has elected a President (Boonrucksar Soonthornthum, Thailand) and a General Secretary (Chatief Kunjaya, Indonesia) for a term of five years. In 2011 the Olympics took place in Europe for the first time. In Poland the International Council has elected a new President (Chatief Kunjaya, Indonesia) and Secretary General (Greg Stachowski, Poland). Regional coordinators were also elected (Thaís Mothé Diniz, Brazil, for America and Aniket Sule, India, for Asia). The number of participants is growing steadily.
