Ira von Mellenthin (born April 23, 1964 in Dannenberg ; † June 29, 2004 in Hamburg ) was a German journalist , columnist and author .

Ira von Mellenthin comes from the noble family of the von Mellenthin .
Her parents were Albrecht von Mellenthin (born April 30, 1935) and Maren Bloch von Blottnitz (born October 3, 1937), who had three other children in addition to Ira: Kaspar, Caroline and Alexander Wilhelm. Ira's grandfather Alexander Magnus Ottmar von Mellenthin died on November 23, 1941 during the war against the Soviet Union in the Donets Basin . Both great uncles were Wehrmacht generals who survived the war.
Life
After graduating from high school in Rheinbach near Bonn in 1983 , Mellenthin first worked as an inventory management assistant at a retailer in Hamburg. After studying business administration at the University of Hamburg , she decided to study political science with economics as a minor. During her studies, she began to write as a freelancer for WELT am SONNTAG and increasingly focused her interest on political journalism. The prospective journalist acquired her journalistic skills in the mid / late 1980s as an intern at the German Press Agency (dpa) and Associated Press (AP) and through internships in the “Hamburg Journal” of the NDR and in the Hamburg editorial team of the daily newspaper The WORLD . From 1994 Mellenthin worked as a permanent editor at WELT am SONNTAG and wrote interim for the Hamburger Abendblatt . In the spring of 2000 she moved to the Hamburg editorial team at WELT; afterwards she worked for the editorial team across the region. In this role she wrote for WELT, WELT am SONNTAG as well as for Berliner Morgenpost . From 2001 onwards she followed the rise and fall of right-wing populist politician Ronald Barnabas Schill in critical parliamentary reports, and she also made a name for herself with publications on the Hamburg police force .
On June 29, 2004, the young journalist died unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage.
