Iragna was a political municipality in the Riviera district of the Swiss canton of Ticino until April 1, 2017 . On April 2, 2017, Iragna merged with the former municipalities of Cresciano , Lodrino and Osogna to form the new municipality of Riviera .

geography

The municipality stretches largely over the Val d'Iragna , which is traversed by the Riale d'Iragna and extends to the Poncione Rosso ( 2506  m above sea level ), which forms the border with the Val Verzasca . The valley, which is now heavily forested, once had extensive Alpine farming, but today all the Alps have been abandoned and it is relatively wild.

The village itself is located at the mouth of the Val d'Iragna on the right side of the valley of the Riviera . It is 294  m above sea level. M. and lay over the course of the river Ticino , which today runs straightened further east and forms the municipality boundary. Today there is a wooded wetland with several ponds on the former course of the river.

history

The village is first mentioned in 1210 as Vicinia von Inagna . It used to belong to the Leventina Valley with Prosito , Lodrino and Moleno and sent ten members to the Council of the Valley. Since 1441, at the time the Leventina was ceded to the canton of Uri , it was no longer part of it. At that time, the Duke of Milan excluded Iragna and Lodrino (with Prosito and Moleno) from this assignment; Until the final conquest by the Swiss, these formed a ducal vicariate under the government of a vicar who the villages themselves chose.
