Isaak Volmar , Baron von Rieden (* 1582 ; † October 13, 1662 in Regensburg ) was an Austrian politician and, as the imperial envoy at the Westphalian Peace Congress in Münster and Osnabrück, one of the most important negotiators.

Life

Isaak Volmar came from a family of civil servants in the Duchy of Württemberg and was born either in Urach or - less likely - in Weilersteusslingen on the Swabian Alb. His father Abraham Volmar was the Württemberg bailiff in Weilersteusslingen, while his grandfather Simplicius Volmar had worked as an under bailiff in Urach. Isaak Volmar studied law at the University of Freiburg and converted to the Catholic faith. He entered the service of the Tyrolean line of the House of Habsburg and became Chancellor of the Upper Austrian Lands in Ensisheim .

Later Volmar entered the service of the widowed ruling Archduchess Claudia of Austria-Tyrol ( Claudia de Medici ) in Innsbruck and became the leading politician at this court. There he got into serious arguments with the court chancellor Wilhelm Biener , who strongly criticized Volmar because of his conciliatory attitude, especially towards Duke Eberhard III. from Württemberg, made. In Biener's view, Volmar did not do enough to ensure that the three Württemberg lords Achalm , Hohenstaufen and Blaubeuren claimed by the Archdukes of Austria-Tyrol . Biener also accused Volmar of failing to block the Hohentwiel Fortress .

From 1643 Isaak Volmar was involved in the peace negotiations in Münster as a diplomat on behalf of the emperor. He was also Chancellor of Alsace during the Thirty Years War .
