The capital territory of Islamabad (English Islamabad Capital Territory ; Urduاسلام آباد وفاقی دارالحکومت علاقہ) around the Pakistani capital Islamabad was established in 1970 after the capital was moved from the transition capital Rawalpindi in 1967 to the new planned capital Islamabad.

The territory is bordered to the north by the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to the south by the province of Punjab , to which the area also belonged before 1970.

population

The mother tongue of 71.7% of the population is Punjabi , 10.1% speak the national language Urdu , and another 9.5% speak Pashtun . 95.5% of the population are Muslim , another 4.1% are Christians .

The literacy rate in 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 85% (women: 79%, men: 91%), making it the highest in all of Pakistan.
